Arena 11.00 contains many customer-requested enhancements, specifically in the areas of model debugging, drawing capabilities, and template development. Listed below are the features added for this release, as well as a comprehensive listing of features added in previous releases.
·
Arena Version 11.0
String Support
Arena now allows character data to be stored and used in global variables, expressions, and entity attributes. A rich set of string-related enhancements include the ability to:

o
Dynamically assign new string values to variables or attributes.
o
Use string values in simulation expressions such as conditional logic.
o
Read character data from external files into variables or attributes.
o
Write character data to external files.
o
Use new functions to perform string/numeric conversion, return an ASCII character, perform binary or textual string comparison, or return a formatted string.
o
Animate text strings using a Variable animation object (Animate toolbar).
o
Animate different pictures based on a string trigger value in a global picture.
Auto-Connect Enhancement and Module Placement Preview
Arena's Auto-Connect feature has been enhanced to allow you to drag and drop a new module or submodel object graphically onto an existing connector to insert the object automatically into that location in the logic. When graphically placing a new module or submodel, a translucent outline of the object is also now shown to help place the object.

Picture Enhancements
In a Global, Resource, or Transporter picture, you may now animate a series of pictures for a trigger value or state using a specified timing (in simulation time). This feature allows you to more easily add animation effects such as a drill bit moving up and down while a resource is busy, or tires rotating on a transporter while the transporter is moving. In the Entity Pictures editor, multiple drawings with the same picture name may now be defined. During a model run, Arena will randomly select one of the drawings to animate an entity when the picture name is assigned (for example, at entity creation). This feature allows you to randomize the animation more easily for an entity type (for example, animate multiple pictures for a "person" entity) without having to use picture sets and explicit assignment logic.

Queue Animation Enhancement
When an entity enters a queue, Arena now provides the option to animate the entity moving smoothly along the drawn queue line to its rank position in the queue. The speed of a queue's arrival animation is configurable.

New Symbol Icons in Arena Symbol Factory
New pictures (165) have been added in the following categories of Arena Symbol Factory:

o
Logistics
o
People
o
Medical
o
Military
New OnChange Block
An OnChange module has been added to Arena's Blocks panel. This block allows you to monitor the values of one or more specified variables. The block fires and creates an entity if one of the monitored variables is assigned a new value and an optional condition is true. The OnChange block may be a more efficient alternative to using a Scan block or Hold module if the purpose of the scanned condition is to monitor the values of global variables.

New Grid Utility
A new grid utility is now available through the Arena Solutions Provider Program. This open-source utility allows you to take advantage of two or more networked computers (a grid) to run multiple simulation replications concurrently across multiple processors. The use of this technology can substantially decrease the time required to complete simulations; particularly in cases where a scenario requires several long-running replications.

Animation Playback Capability
The feature to create animation event files has been made available to all users (Run > Setup > Run Control). This can be used for running post-processed 2D and 3D animations. Note: Running 3D animations requires the optional Arena 3DPlayer software.

New Runtime Activation
A new Runtime activation is now available that specially configures Arena to load any model regardless of size with runtime restrictions (that is, users may run simulations and analyze results but cannot enhance the model). This feature provides an economical way to extend the benefits of Arena runtimes to users who do not own Arena Professional Edition.

OptQuest for Arena: Efficient Frontier
OptQuest allows you to vary the bound of a constraint during optimization. OptQuest plots the best objective value for each bound in a new efficient frontier graph. If you have defined a constraint with varying bounds, a new Efficient Frontier node will be added to the tree. The Efficient Frontier node will plot the objective value for each bound in the constraint. The grid at the top tells you the actual constraint value for the bound as well at the objective value.
